MANAGER’S COMMENTS:
Well, this, to put it mildly, was some season for Team Orion 365. A first grand tour, a highest ever points total and a first World Championships (the U23 ones, but still…)
Once again, home-grown phenomenon Grant Schuyler lead the way, although he had an off year by his astronomical standards. However, his 9th place finish in Norway and consistent performance in the US helped to inspire the exploits of some of our smaller names, two of whom we will come to soon.
Season 63 saw something few expected, though – a semi-renaissance for Julius de Snoo, our flying Dutchman, who took a backseat due to Grant’s rise and Uwe Dering’s (more to come later) arrival over the last few seasons. However, he would outdo expectations this year with a second placed finish in division 3 and a win in division 4 when he got his rare opportunities. Given the structure of our squad, more can be expected in season 64.
Artur Paconio defined the concept of a ‘dream debut’ when, immediately after signing from Time Indaiatuba, he swept the favourites away to hold on for a stunning breakaway win in Bolivia at the Trofeo Ciudad de la Plata. He didn’t replicate this win later in the season but was a key domestique, riding in both Norway and the Race of the Minutemen, where he helped Grant to pull off his impressive finishes.
Uwe Dering was quite possibly domestique of the season before he left for division 1’s Jubalon Pro Cycling, riding the same tours as Grant, Julius and Artur and nearly finishing in the top 9 at Norway on two occasions himself. He did get his chance in Peru on day 1 and took it, finishing second.
Maddox Thibodeaux was the breakout star in the break, with his stunning stage win helping him to 2nd in the Sicilia YC. This was a shocking 2nd breakaway win in one season for the team!
Julius’ wasn’t the only renaissance this season – Paulo Pozzovivo returned from a number of poor seasons to notch up a top 9 on home soil at the race in honour of his idol.
New recruits Aad Beekmans and Ulrich Naets both picked up small numbers of points, as did the now retired Luis Campos.
